Update
Jaarcijfers 2023
CEO Marjan Rintel

We mochten vorig jaar namelijk meerdere prijzen in ontvangst nemen.

Update
Annual results 2023
CEO Marjan Rintel
Today we present the annual results for KLM. AFKL will also be presenting these results. We are on the right track. The demand for air travel remains high. Our profit, however, is lower than last year. Our operational profit totalled €650 million, while our turnover amounted to €12.1 billion.
The figures reveal that 2023 was a year with many different facets. Was it an easy year? Absolutely not. Are we making a recovery after Covid? Certainly. This was a year of many ups and downs, especially the fourth quarter, when we experienced an operational loss of €18 million. We have mentioned the reasons many times: the post-Covid impact and the conflicts around the world. We faced operational challenges, a shortage in staff, long delivery times for parts and bad weather conditions. These factors demanded a lot from you. And we always managed to get the job done, time and time again. This inspires respect. That blue energy remains the driving force behind KLM. Thank you! We are undertaking a number of actions to regain control of our operations. More on this later in the update.
We have also achieved many great accomplishments. Our flight handling is increasingly better aligned with our ground services, we have hired hundreds of new colleagues, acquired new aircraft and continued the implementation of Premium Comfort. Simultaneously, we have implemented improvements and made changes in our operations. Examples include the technical resources we are installing, together with Schiphol Airport, in the baggage handling areas. This will significantly reduce the load of demanding physical labour for our colleagues. We are buying electric equipment to reduce the emissions from diesel engines. And we are working with Schiphol to find solutions to reduce the fine particulate matter emissions. The safety and health of our people is our priority, without any compromise.
Flying is the future and requires a strong vision
We expect the government to provide a well-thought-out vision for the airline industry for the long term. In the past year we saw all kinds of trial balloons and loose initiatives in the political debate: to levy or not levy a transfer tax, to shrink operations or not, to implement an experimental scheme or not. It seemed like everything kept changing. On behalf of KLM, we have put in great effort to contribute to this much-needed joint vision. That is the only way that we as an industry and as a company can provide a connection, employment and a positive outlook for travellers and the neighbours of Schiphol Airport. We have noticed that we are being heard by the community. Our plan 'Cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient' has found its way to every government and political table. Our 10 commitments, which we developed with our 30 industry partners, are also getting attention in the media and in politics.
We want the same thing as the government: to keep the Netherlands connected to the rest of the world, with respect for our society and climate. We continue to provide air travel with our amazing airline for our customers and our employees. And we also need to do better for the future and leverage technology to innovate. What does this mean exactly?
Fly: a great airline for our customers and employees
When I look towards 2024, I realize that a lot will change this year as well. One constant will be KLM continuing to fly around the globe with pride. We want to remain the best choice for our customers and the best employer for our employees. That means first and foremost always providing safe, stable and reliable operations: the backbone of our company and our priority in 2024. We are seeing the first improvements in our operations. We have to be honest and admit that we are not quite there yet. That is why we are implementing an operational improvement plan with 5 must win battles. By undertaking these 5 steps together, we ensure that our operations achieve the quality that our customers expect from us.
Improve for the future In 2024 we will continue to make air travel cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient. Flying is an essential form of transportation, but we do need to make improvements so we can continue to connect people in the future. New aircraft, like the Neo we expect to receive this year, have lower emissions and generate much less noise. New fuels are less polluting. In the long term we will be renewing our long-range fleet with the Airbus A350 aircraft, the most fuel-efficient and quietest model of its generation. Operational measures to reduce CO2 emissions, such as reducing the weight on board and using electric ground handling equipment, also contribute to our goals.
Innovate with technology In the meantime we are making gradual progress every day in applying (new) technology. It is fascinating to see how our company is already innovating and what opportunities still lie ahead. This includes the use of artificial intelligence to reduce food waste on board.
All of this also has implications for our finances. We have to reduce cost and increase profit. That is the only way we can afford all our investments in a better airline industry. This is a major responsibility, but one we are all responsible for! Erik will share more about this. Our annual Flight Plan outlines all our 2024 priorities.
This year we celebrate our 105th anniversary. If we continue to work together as a team with all KLM colleagues, things will gradually improve. To make sure that the operation runs safe and smooth. We will fly cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient. People will remain connected, transport essential goods and discover new destinations.
This is the only way we can demonstrate to society that a healthy aviation industry is crucial to our collective future.
Kind regards,
Erik Swelheim
Chief Financial Officer
We can look back on a solid financial year for KLM. Our profit was €650 million and our turnover increased compared to 2022: from €10.7 to €12.1 billion. This is a good development, which affirms we are on the right track. Last year we also strengthened our capital assets and reduced our net debt. This leaves us in a stronger financial position, but we still have some work to do. Unfortunately, we were unable to fully leverage the recovery in the airline industry. Our production fell behind that of our competitors and our costs increased significantly.
This resulted in a less than stellar 4th quarter. In this quarter we not only saw our revenue fall, but our costs also increased. We had to cancel a lot of flights due to a lower fleet availability and inclement weather conditions. In December, there were as many as 10 days when weather conditions made it necessary to cancel flights.
This resulted in much higher costs. We had to rebook many customers and needed to lease aircraft. This translated into an €18 million operational loss in the 4th quarter. We cannot afford to underestimate this negative trend over the course of the year. It will take a lot of work to return to an upward spiral.
What does this mean for the upcoming year? It is key that we continue to invest. Invest in new aircraft, sustainable fuel, more digitalisation, in our buildings and employment conditions. This means that as KLM we have to aim for higher profit margins in the next 3-5 years so we can fund our endeavours. Another important goal is to control our costs. We must and want to do this together with you. This is a responsibility we all share. Be critical of our expenses and leverage opportunities whenever possible, we can all contribute to that.
I have faith in the future of the airline industry: flying remains in demand and our customers keep coming back. If we put all our efforts into creating a quieter, cleaner and more fuel-efficient airline industry, KLM can continue to connect the Netherlands with the rest of the world and bring people together.

Chief Operating Officer
2023 was a challenging year for our operations. We have already implemented many measures to resolve the problems we encountered and fortunately we are starting to see improvements. For example, Ground Services hired 1000 new colleagues. Are we moving fast enough? No. Some areas still lack enough colleagues to do all the work. Combined with the global supply chain problems in delivering materials and aircraft parts, this has resulted in reduced fleet availability. And the bad weather that started very early in the year also didn't help.
Our partner airlines and competitors all face the same problems and compared to them we are not doing that badly. However, that is not much of a consolation. Especially to all our colleagues who work every day in operations. So, I would also like to express my sincere thanks for your dedication and patience. You are delivering outstanding performances.
Improving our operational quality is our top priority. We also have to look towards the future as flying will remain an essential form of transportation. This demands a longer-term improvement plan. This involves not only what we are doing today to improve our operations, but also what we have to do in the coming years.
Five must-win battles
To be well prepared for the summer of 2024, we developed a plan with five must-win battles. We worked together on this with the Management Team Operations, which encompasses all the managers of the operational divisions.
1. Enough reserve fleet. We have to create more fleet reserve, so we have increased our reserve fleet for all fleet types. This should help to reduce the number of flight cancellations due to a delay in the maintenance schedule or an acute technical defect.
2. Enough cockpit staff. This year we will be hiring 265 cockpit staff. That is three times more than three years ago. In addition to hiring new cockpit staff, we are also ensuring that we have sufficient trained cockpit staff for every cockpit position. This year more cockpit staff than ever before will complete a retraining programme, almost 900. This requires a great effort from our flight instructors, training and planning departments.
3. Enough capacity for (unplanned) maintenance. If an aircraft suffers an acute technical problem, repair should not be at the expense of our planned maintenance. E&M wants to provide extra capacity for this and is resorting to three comprehensive measures. These are currently being assessed by the employee participation. These measures are:
Subcontract the A-check Airbus A330 on Fridays
Subcontract the C-check 737 to KLM UK
Reduce external customers of Line Maintenance International
E&M is also working hard to reduce the number of complaints (DDs) before summer and has composed so-called sweep teams to address the top 10 cabin complaints (defective seats, defective ovens, etc.) for which we have the resources and parts.
4. Enough pushback colleagues. We are in the middle of hiring and training a significant number of pushback drivers. This summer we expect to have at least an additional 30 new colleagues, permanent and flex workers, compared to last summer. This requires a lot of training effort. The pushback service is working hard to provide a smarter and faster training module and train extra trainers. We want to make sure that our new colleagues are properly trained to undertake their duties. If needed, we will continue to hire more employees.
5. Enough catering drivers. Last year we hired 30 drivers and this year we continue to hire and train new drivers until the start of the summer peak season. We expect to hire an additional 15 to 25 new drivers for Catering.
I believe that we are doing all the right things to be well prepared for summer. This, in combination with the effort and hard work of all our colleagues, gives me full confidence that we will succeed.
Barry ter Voert
Chief Experience Officer and EVP Business Development
Last year we saw a lot of positive developments in our customer experience. We have a lot more to offer our customers: new aircraft, new destinations, additional services, more options and more comfort. Not only in the air, but also at airports and online. We worked hard to restore the KLM network to what it was before Covid. Customers have more flight options to Asia, the US and within Europe. This is partially the result of our continued expansion of joint ventures, code sharing and commercial partnerships. Soon we will be offering an additional 20 destinations in India, thanks to our codeshare partnership with IndiGo.
Our customer experiences on board, in the lounge and online have also improved. We are renewing our Boeing 777 fleet and will eventually replace the Airbus A330 with the A350. This is an important step in achieving our ambition to offer cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient flights. The A350 aircraft will reduce our CO2 emissions up to 25% and generate up to 40% less noise. The installation of Premium Comfort seats in the Boeing 787 has now been completed and is in full swing for the Boeing 777 aircraft. The first reactions from our passengers have been very positive. The renovations of the KLM Lounge in the Schengen area at Schiphol is almost completed and our lounges in Toronto and Houston have undergone a major upgrade. We are offering our customers more choice by introducing Premium Light fares, the option of buying an empty seat next to yours and pre-ordering meals in Business Class prior to your flight. Our online service for refunds, rebooking and delayed baggage has also greatly improved. It is great to see that these improvements are being noticed and appreciated. This was reflected in a number of awards we received last year. For the third year in a row KLM won the APEX World Class Award, a recognition by our customer and the airline industry of our efforts in customer wellness, safety and sustainability. Our participation in the Sustainable Flight Challenge garnered us two prizes: KLM won the award for Best Adoption and KLC took home the award for Best Waste Management. This is once again a great compliment to all KLM colleagues: despite our staff shortage and all the other challenges, we have managed once again to further improve the customer experience.
Miriam Kartman
Chief People Officer and EVP Human Resources & Industrial Relations
The foundation of KLM is a safe, predictable and reliable operation. In addition to an available fleet and capacity, we really need professional, proud and motivated KLM employees to achieve this. To become a good airline, you also have to be a good employer to your employees.
Recruitment delivered an incredible performance in 2023 by hiring almost 5,000 new KLM employees. However, the recruitment and selection of these new colleagues was not the only great achievement. Onboarding all these colleagues and ensuring that they are ready to get to work in their team was also a huge achievement.
Our new colleagues are very excited about the ‘Welcome on Board’ days. We want to keep that enthusiasm, for all our KLM colleagues. KLM has to remain flexible and agile in this rapidly changing world. This works both ways: when employees use their talents in the right place, it not only makes them more agile, but it also enables KLM to respond faster to new developments in the world.
Another priority is the sustainable deployment of our people. That is why last year we worked on an improved employment conditions package and the new collective labour agreements for Ground, Cabin and Cockpit staff also had a positive impact. We also made strides in leadership, giving people ownership of their career development and D&I. Today women compose 30% of management at KLM and we have offered workshops Leadership during change for our crew. We have also launched several special programmes with a focus on communication and engagement.
These topics are part of the major themes that HR has translated into ‘People Promises’. One of these is our goal to create a safe, sustainable and motivating workplace. We have put a lot of effort into simplifying the reporting process for inappropriate behaviour. We now have a central advice and reporting point. I’m personally very pleased with this development. Reports are now registered and handled in a more centralised way.
HR has great ambitions, and we want to achieve the ‘People Promises’. That is why we created the People Transformation department to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of our actions.
But the most important resource of all is our motivated and professional KLM employee! And you have been doing this for almost 105 years, which gives us the confidence to take on the challenges that await us in 2024.
